Amazon to Rival iTunes for Downloaders

Just when you thought Amazon.com couldn't possibly sell MORE items, they've come up with a new way to get us to open our wallets and fork over some cash.

Say hello to Amazon MP3

Amazon has decided to sell legal music downloads, which will put it in direct competition with Apple's download software, iTunes. iTunes has held the monopoly on music downloads thanks to its association with the incredibly popular, iPod mp3 player. Amazon MP3, as the new Amazon.com Inc. division will be named, will offer a wide range of music priced from $0.89 to $0.99 per song. Amazon MP3 claims to offer the largest selection of music downloads, with over 2 million songs online ranging from songs from major labels to independent labels.

Users can download music onto any of the popular mp3 players including: iPods, Zunes and Zens, as well as other devices such as PC or Mac computers and cell phones. Users can organize music downloads using either Windows Media Player or iTunes and can burn music onto CDs.
What is drawing a lot of attention is Amazon MP3's choice to release their downloads in DRM-free MP3 format, running the risk of having unlocked tracks on iTunes. This move is being hailed by anti-DRM advocates. The RIAA must be having a hayday with this latest news.

Three cheers for cheaper tunes.
